LIBER DE RE NAVALI - LIBER DE VESTIARIA - LIBER DE VASCULIS - LIBER DE COLORIBUS by Lazarii Bayfii (Bayfius)
Published by in Paris, Basel or Lyon by Froben (Frobenius) in MVXXXVII [1537] DESCRIPTION: Liber de re Navali deals with ships and shipbuilding and describes mostly Greek and Roman vessels of antiquity. It is profusely illustrated. The text is entirely in Latin & Greek and the margins have been annotated mainly in Latin. The book measures 6 " X 8" X 1" (15cms x 20.3cms x 2.5cms). The binding is (I believe) in calfskin and includes remnants of closure straps. There is evidence that the book was rebound (perhaps over 300 years ago) since part of the handwritting on the edges has been cut off during the 2nd binding process. The book includes four subjects: De re Navali spans 148 pages, De re Vestiaria, is 91 pages long, De re Vasculis is 63 pages long and Liber de Coloribus is 18 pages long. This book and other early books on ships and shipbuilding have been described by R.C. Anderson in "The Mariner's Mirror, Volume X 1924. A copy of this article accompanies the book. This is a second printing of the First Edition which was printed in Paris in 1536. CONDITION: The book is in surprisingly good condition. The vellum covered boards show some rubbing and a few bookworm holes plus some nibbling at the front board, top right edge. The binding is solid but the back board is partially detached at the spine. Text is clean and bright, with practically no foxing. A few pages have remnants of water stains, which don't affect the text or illustrations. No owners' book plate or stamps. The following pages are, unfortunately, missing:1through 8; 159/160; 191/192; 207/208; 301through 304. A total of 9 sheets are missing.
